"This is not a partisan issue..."

How, after “We the People” in Washington state narrowed our options down to two candidates for Secretary of State, did we end up with a write-in campaign push from the County and State Republican Parties, who are the acclaimed “We the People” people?  Are the primary voters in Washington State not “We the People”?

Just a year after the constituents of Washington legislative district 8 were able to breath a collective sigh of relief that they would have a new state representative in Position 1, Brad Klippert has decided to dust himself off.  Yes, the multitalented swiss army knife Brad Klippert who is a Benton County Sheriff’s Deputy, teacher, Ki-Be school public address announcer, pastor, prolific house bill writer, poor campaign fundraiser, and 5th place finisher in the 2022 congressional primary, has chosen to mount a write-in campaign for Washington Secretary of State with the tagline “The Republican choice for Secretary of State in Washington”.

This tagline may seem innocent enough, but is immediately conflicted on Brad’s campaign website where he states:

"This is not a partisan issue... Every single citizen in WA State deserves to have the right to know that when they cast their ballot it will not be manipulated in any way, shape, or form.  And that's exactly why I'm running for Secretary of State's office."

We should pause here to ask ourselves a question.  If “This is not a partisan issue…”, why does Brad Klippert need to be running a write-in campaign?  Julie Anderson, who has been the non-partisan Pierce County Auditor since 2009, made it through the primary and gives voters the option to vote for the type of individual Brad is talking about.

While Brad's laundry list of county level Republican Party endorsements (29 counties) is amusing it may lack substance. Julie Anderson has accumulated an impressive 27 of 39 (assuming she endorses herself...) endorsements from current county auditors in Washington state.  This includes 14 Republican, 6 Democrat, and 7 Independent/Non Partisan auditors.  Perhaps county auditors know what it takes to be Secretary of State?

  1. I love that the local Republicans will pull this move to help cement a victory for Steve Hobbs, an Inslee appointee, all while claiming that Norma Rodriguez shouldn't be elected as a judge because she was appointed by Inslee.
