Maintaining Filing Week Altitude

Well, Filing Week sure jetted by. We learned who will run for local races such as city councils and school boards in 2023 to help pilot the future of our communities. With so many positions and candidates, one may not have the runway to research them all or know how to navigate various sources of information, especially given how time flies.

But hey, that's what you pay us for

Of course, with 92 candidates in Benton County and 50 candidates in Franklin County, even we humbly admit that we don't take more than a 50,000-foot view, at least for now.

Rather than try more puns that won't land, let's just sit back, relax, and enjoy this nice short blog post.

I must admit that I'm not well-versed in the various Port-related dramas that occurred over the past several years. But the fact that newly appointed Port Commissioner Christy Rasmussen will defend her seat against the disgruntled former Executive Director Scott Keller isn't the story here.

The third candidate is Cliff Dyer. Cliff is a pilot and managing our small community airports is part of the duties of our ports.

He also has quite an interesting backstory, to say the least. Per the Spokesman-Review, he "lied on his annual Federal Aviation Administration license renewal for four consecutive years" and thus was guilty of "making false statements to a government agency." What did he lie about?

"Dyer failed to disclose to the FAA that he had been convicted in Benton County in June 1998 of second-degree child rape and was undergoing sex offender treatment."

Well, that's...interesting.

Also of note, "[f]ollowing a November 1998 fatal airplane crash in the Columbia River, near Vantage, he was cited for carelessness and recklessness by the federal agency...Two agents of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service...died in the crash."

I can't imagine Dyer is a serious candidate with such a turbulent past, but the forums should be interesting.
